The usage of visual materials in the formation of senior preschoolers’ monologue skills in English

The article is devoted to the development of senior preschoolers’ monologue skills in the English language with the usage of visualization. We thoroughly examine the term visualization and identify visual materials that can be used in the development of monologue skills: teacher’s and preschoolers’ drawings, illustrations, photos and paintings.
The article describes age characteristics and types of monologue speech acquired by preschoolers in their native language (Russian): (1) narration; (2) description; (3) contamination (a mixed type; for instance, narration with detailed description); and (4) reasoning. Speech development of senior preschoolers is analyzed according to the Childhood Integrated Educational Preschool Programme (Babaeva et al. 2019, 134). We explore the dynamics of speech development and highlight characteristic features in the structure of descriptive monologues produced by young learners: (1) senior preschoolers make mistakes in the logical order, (2) struggle to start and finish the monologue independently without the teacher’s prompts and (3) use nominative sentences to describe objects (Bizikova 2014, 31).
Teachers can use visualization with young learners as a support tool helping them to produce logically structured monologue speech in English. In this article, we suggest the criteria for selection of visual materials and investigate application of children’s creative work in the development of their monologue speech skills.
The research paper examines the stages of work on a monologue developed by I. V. Vronskaya. Using Vronskaya’s theory as the basis, we develop the methodology of using visualization in the development of senior preschoolers’ monologue skills in English and outline the algorithm of teaching preschoolers English monologue speech with the help of visual materials on the topic Farm Animals.
