Abstract

On 13 November 2025, the round table entitled ‘Children as a Hard-to-Reach Group: Access, Trust, Rapport’ was held within the framework of the Seventh All-Russian Sociological Congress at the Higher School of Economics. The session addressed methodological challenges in childhood studies and brought together expert sociologists to discuss the applicability of existing research methods in the context of legislative child protection initiatives, changes in the periodization of childhood, and transformations in child–parent relations. The presentations reaffirmed the contemporary view that childhood is a diverse phenomenon and that each study requires individual methodological adjustment considering ethical aspects and children’s competencies. As general recommendations, participants agreed to more active discussion of childhood periodization based on sociological research, children’s autonomy, and the role of children’s voices in debates about contemporary childhood across various public and expert platforms.
