The article analyzes the influence of the modern media environment on children aged 11-12. The authors consider hypotheses related to the influence of animation on children of different ages, including younger adolescents. The hypotheses under study were put forward in the course of the interregional interuniversity study “Modern childhood. Strokes to a self-portrait” organized by the Institute of Childhood of Herzen University in the 2022-23 academic year for master’s students.
The article descries the research methodology and the method for evaluating the empirical data. The research involved 61 children aged 11–12 from Saint Petersburg.
Gravity Falls (Disney Television Animation, 2012–2016) is the favorite cartoon in this age group. Younger teenagers prefer foreign-made animation. The main genres of the preferred serial cartoons are science fiction, adventure and anime.
The study revealed that children aged 11–12 perceive the main idea, characters and images of cartoon characters. They watch not only modern, but also old cartoons, and prefer animated series and foreign cartoons. When watching cartoons, children do not fix their attention on the main idea and values, being distracted by the means of expression. This can negatively affect the formation of children’s ideas about the world and themselves in this world.
The genre of adventure serial cartoons preferred by younger teenagers influences the formation of their consumer position, desire to relax and the attitude to animation as entertainment, not art. Competent psychological and pedagogical support of adults is needed in addition to the ideas about the world and one’s place in it received on the basis of viewing modern animation products.
