Abstract

This article presents the findings from a study of families raising non-verbal children with poor volitional regulation and a tendency to wander off. The study used a practical tool called the Primary Communication Diary. This tool aims to address two social and educational issues simultaneously: (1) it ensures the child’s communicative safety with unfamiliar adults if the child becomes lost or disoriented, including in multicultural environments, and (2) it ensures continuity in the communicative environment between adults interacting with the child across different social and educational settings. The Primary Communication Diary is universal in terms of age (from preschool upwards), easy to complete, and provides information that enables an unfamiliar adult to maintain productive contact with a disoriented child when verbal communication is limited or impossible.

The diary consists of four sections, which include: brief information about the child and their family, descriptions of the child’s reactions to common requests from adults in educational and family settings (presented as a list), and descriptions of the child’s speech and vocal capabilities with familiar and unfamiliar adults and peers in both settings. The guidelines for using the diary include comments and explanations for each section.

Diary differs from existing communication passports, books, and albums because it is compact, contains minimal information required for an unfamiliar adult to establish contact with a child in a stressful situation, and covers the child’s communication methods across various environments.
