Practical use of artificial intelligence in teaching Finnish

This article analyzes the use of neural network technologies in teaching Finnish, based on a study involving a group of high school students from School No. 23 in Saint Petersburg. It describes specific methods of artificial intelligence (AI) use aimed at supporting student motivation and success in Finnish language acquisition and evaluates their effectiveness. The relevance of this study stems from the rapid implementation of AI technologies in education in recent years, driven by the wide-range capabilities of generative AI. However, students’ independent use of AI for processing and analyzing information remains understudied, despite the significant impact of AI on the effectiveness and quality of foreign language learning. The methods included the use of simplified language forms (selkokieli) and generative AI technology to provide students with pre-processed information in simplified Finnish. The results support the hypothesis that the use of AI technologies enables an effective educational process. At the same time, the study identified specific features of AI application in foreign language teaching, including the importance of verification, comparative analysis of different models, and the need to develop digital literacy among both teachers and students. The findings emphasize that the implementation of AI can significantly optimize foreign language learning but requires the development of new pedagogical protocols and a clear understanding of the responsibilities of all participants in the teaching and learning process. The study confirms the potential for further expansion of AI integration into education, particularly in the context of the insufficient availability of resources for studying less commonly taught languages such as Finnish.
