Child well-being, school satisfaction, positive relationships with peers and teachers, and the strengthening of students’ agency are important components of school life and a favorable psychological climate.
The formation of a psychologically safe environment and school climate is examined in this article through the lens of participatory design of the school’s physical-spatial environment, creating spaces for active interaction among educational stakeholders.
The value of participatory design lies in the emerging sense of belonging, the opportunity for decision-making and responsibility, support for others’ initiatives, and informal interaction and collaboration between children and educators. Participatory design positively impacts school climate, as demonstrated in a case study of joint child-adult transformation of school common areas and library spaces. To substantiate this claim, a study was conducted on changes in school climate using the ‘Psychological Safety of the Educational Environment’ and ‘School Climate’ methodologies.
The obtained data indicate positive dynamics in indicators of educational environment safety (attitude toward the educational environment, protection from psychological violence) and indicators characterizing a favorable psychological climate (positive attitude toward school and teachers, reduced environmental aggressiveness). This demonstrates that participation itself, collaborative work formats, and interaction between students and educators lead to their closer connection and enable the formation of a different type of relationship — cooperation, which benefits school climate.
The presented experience of participatory design of school common areas and library spaces can be successfully implemented in most educational organizations interested in fostering interaction among educational stakeholders and forming a positive school climate.
