Scientific tourism: Expectations of high school students

Research on scientific tourism has expanded significantly over the past three years, driven by various factors — including the Decade of Science and Technology program, which aims to promote scientific activities and increase public awareness about Russia’s scientific achievements. As part of this initiative, new scientific and educational tourism routes have been developed and made available to a broad audience. High school students represent a particularly important target group for this form of tourism. However, many travel companies design their offerings based on parental expectations, often overlooking the actual interests and preferences of teenage participants. Recognizing that teenagers have distinct needs and require a more tailored approach to scientific tourism is essential for fostering engagement. This article seeks to identify the consumer preferences of high school students regarding scientific tourism programs, providing insights to create more appealing and relevant tourism products. To gather data, a survey was conducted among 458 participants aged 16–33. The results show that while 60 % of respondents express interest in scientific tours, only 23 % have prior experience with this type of tourism. These findings can serve as a valuable resource for tour operators, travel tour designers, and educational institutions looking to integrate into the tourism industry.
